Scholarships and Bursaries

The Government of Alberta is committed to encouraging and rewarding the excellence of Alberta students. In 2016-17 there is approximately $240 million budgeted for student financial assistance.

  • $90M in scholarships for 49,000 students, of which $7M is for indigenous awards
  • $54M in bursaries and grants for 16,700 students
  • $60M for student loan and student debt management program administration
  • $36M for program delivery

In addition, $579 million will be available for student loans to more than 77,000 students 

Important Definitions

  • What is a scholarship?
    A scholarship is a monetary award based on academic merit or excellence in a specific area of study or discipline (academics, athletics, community involvement, music, etc.)
  • What is a bursary?
    A bursary is a monetary grant based primarily on financial need.

    Alberta Scholarship & Bursary Programs

Advanced Education administers scholarships and bursaries through the following three programs:

  1. Achievement Scholarships
    Established in the year 2000 by the Government of Alberta, the achievement scholarships recognize the excellence of Alberta students. The program includes the Jason Lang Scholarship, the Jimmie Condon Athletic Scholarship, the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship and the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Board Family of Scholarships.
    • AIT Board Family of Scholarships
      Since 2002 the Goverment of Alberta, with donations from industry, has created scholarships to recognize the excellence of Alberta apprentices in a trade and trainees in a designated occupation and encourage recipients to complete their training programs. Over 370 Apprentice and Occupational Trainee Scholarships, 500 RAP Scholarships and 21 Pre-Apprentice Scholarships of $1000 each are available annually.
  2. Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund
    Created by an initial $100 million endowment from the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund stimulates the pursuit of excellence by rewarding outstanding achievement and by encouraging and assisting Albertans to achieve their fullest potential.
  3. Needs-Based Bursaries
    Advanced Education administers the Northern Alberta Development Council Bursary.
