Three new members named to Grande Prairie Regional College's Board of Governors
Edmonton... Grande Prairie Regional College is welcoming three new public members to its Board of Governors. Peter Gilchrist, Richard Horner, and Vincent Vavrek were appointed to the board by Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock on December 14. The three-year terms are effective immediately.
"Peter, Richard, and Vincent have a strong interest in community participation and post-secondary education in the Grande Prairie area," said Hancock. "Grande Prairie Regional College has a long-standing reputation for providing access to quality, affordable post-secondary programs in northwestern Alberta and these board appointments will add to that standing."
Peter Gilchrist has a master's degree in education from the University of Alberta and more than 30 years experience as a teacher and school administrator. He has also been an active member in the Valleyview area through his participation in various committees and boards, including town council and Family and Community Support Services.
Richard Horner has been a teacher in the Grande Prairie area for close to 30 years. He has an education degree from the University of Alberta and an automotive service technician Journeyman Certificate with Interprovincial (Red Seal) certification. Horner volunteers in his community as a football coach and has served on the provincial governing body overseeing amateur football in Alberta.
Vincent Vavrek is currently a partner with Fletcher Mudryk and Co. in Grande Prairie. Vavrek has served as the Chairman and Director of the Grande Prairie Regional College Foundation and was the founding director of the Grande Prairie Regional College Alumni Association. He has also served his community by volunteering on various boards and organizations such as the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce and the Grande Prairie United Way.
Each year, Grande Prairie Regional College has more than 2,400 students enrolled in university studies and in career and academic upgrading programs, as well as another 8,000 students registered in training programs and continuing education classes. The Board of Governors plays an important role at the college helping to ensure the goals set out in the business plan are achieved.
