Proposed amendments to further strengthen Alberta’s post-secondary system

Edmonton... Bill 9, the Post-secondary Learning Amendment Act, was introduced in the Legislature March 8, proposing minor changes to the original legislation, which supports Alberta's vision for an adult learning system that is accessible, flexible and responsive, regardless of where a student chooses to learn.

"By making these changes, we are strengthening a piece of legislation that helps ensure Alberta's post-secondary system is accessible, affordable and high-quality, so that any qualified Albertan who wants to pursue higher learning is able to do so," said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock.

Some of the key changes of Bill 9 include:

  • Clarifying the board membership regulations for technical institutes and colleges to ensure board members serve no more than six consecutive years, as well as to ensure there is adequate flexibility in the number of board members to address emerging needs.
  • Deleting sections relating to the Private Colleges Accreditation Board, since the Campus Alberta Quality Council has assumed the role of reviewing degree proposals.
  • Revising the section on the collection of data to enable the collection of information relating to those who apply but do not enrol in a post-secondary institution, as well as alumni information.
