Province announces $7.1 million for renovation project at Lethbridge Community College

Lethbridge... The Government of Alberta has announced more than $7 million will be allocated to Lethbridge Community College for a major renovation and restoration to the Cousins Building.

"This renovation project is a solid investment in the future of our province - its post-secondary system and its students. These investments will pay off by creating a more functional and energy-efficient building, but more importantly, it will increase the accessibility for students with disabilities and improve the learning environment for all students," said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock.

The project will involve replacing windows, flooring and ceilings in the Cousins Building, as well as upgrading the insulation, mechanical and electrical systems. A major element of the upgrading will also see all of the science laboratories consolidated into the renovated building. Construction is planned to start in May 2006.

"By working closely with Lethbridge Community College, the Alberta government will enhance and protect the infrastructure resources that support post-secondary education and Alberta's vibrant economy for years to come," said Dr. Lyle Oberg, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation.

Pat McMillan, Lethbridge Community College's Board Chair, said the announcement is good news for the college's science-based programs and learners.

"We are now going to have a state-of-the-art facility designed specifically as a home for our science programs and courses. Our learners will benefit greatly from this project, and, in turn, share the skills they have acquired with future employers and the community."

A total of $614 million has been allocated for Alberta's post-secondary institutions under the Government of Alberta's 2005-08 Capital Plan, an increase of $145 million since Budget 2005 was announced in April.
