NorQuest receives $1 million to plan campus expansion
Edmonton... A $1 million contribution from the Alberta government will enable NorQuest College to begin planning the expansion of its downtown campus to include the new NorQuest College Learning Centre.
"In the years ahead, advanced learning in Alberta will increasingly cover the full spectrum of education including literacy, second language programs and distance education - programs that NorQuest College does such an excellent job of providing," said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock. "This expansion will allow NorQuest to take its programs even further and continue supporting Albertans as they advance their education."
The five-storey learning centre will be built north of NorQuest's main campus. It is slated to open in the fall of 2009 and will accommodate 1,500 students.
"NorQuest College has its eye on the future. By looking ahead to the employability needs of learners and the workforce of tomorrow, the college will continue to play an important role in Alberta's vibrant economy," said Dr. Lyle Oberg, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation. "This investment will allow NorQuest College to design an expanded facility that will meet its future growth needs and create a bright future for its students and the province."
A total of $614 million has been allocated for Alberta's post-secondary institutions under the Government of Alberta's 2005-08 Capital Plan - an increase of $145 million since Budget 2005 was announced in April.
"The announcement from the Alberta government is about much more than just financial support. It is government recognition that NorQuest is a vital and important post-secondary institution in the Alberta Advanced Education and Technology system. We're thrilled to have the provincial government's support," said Dr. Wayne Shillington, President, NorQuest College.
