Choosing a Program

Here are some great questions to ask yourself when you’re choosing a post-secondary program. Remember, your learning path can be as unique as you are!

  • Am I more interested in learning new ideas or training for a specific job?
  • Would I like to participate in a co-op program where I earn credit for working while taking classes?
  • How much time would I like to spend in school? Six weeks? Six months? Two years? Four years? More?
  • Can I get one credential for completing one program (a business certificate) and later use it to get a higher-level credential (a business diploma or degree)?  This is referred to as laddering or transferring credits.
  • Is there a specific job I want in the end? Check out the educational requirements for that job on OCCinfo.
  • Is this field regulated by a professional association? If so, does the association recognize this program?
  • Does the class schedule fit with my personal/work schedule?
  • Does the program have a practicum that allows me to work at the job during part of the year?
  • Will I have all the required high school (or high school equivalent) prerequisites to enter this program, or will I need to upgrade?
  • Can I receive credit for some courses through advanced placement?
  • Do I have a new product or business idea I would like assistance with? Does my program allow me to work on this while earning credit towards a certificate, diploma or degree? Does it offer contacts with industry mentors and advisors, access to business services, or start-up funding?
