What We Heard
On April 14-16, 2008, 539 Albertans participated in the Pan-Canadian Interactive Literacy Forum in Edmonton. During the forum, participants discussed what Alberta needs to improve literacy. Their comments were summarized in a Summary of Input on a Literacy Framework for Alberta and were used to develop a Draft Literacy Framework for Alberta.
The draft framework was sent out for comment to Literacy Forum participants, K-12, community adult learning and workforce training partners, and other ministries.
Living Literacy was also informed by extensive consultations with Education and Enterprise and Advanced Education stakeholders over the previous two years. Specifically,
- Targeted consultations in 2008 and 2009 with education stakeholders on literacy and the K-12 Literacy Discussion Paper. Consultations were held through teacher focus groups, online response, curriculum coordinators, external advisory committees, inter-branch meetings and First Nations, Métis and Inuit focus group discussions.
- Regional consultations in 2007 and 2008 with community adult learning providers and post-secondary institutions in response to the Premier’s December 2006 mandate letter to the Minster of Advanced Education and Technology to increase support for community education and literacy programs.
